Men’s tennis solid early, but still falls to Wisconsin (Men’s Tennis Brief)

The following story should have said Adam Schaechterle won at No. 6 singles. The DAILY regrets this error.

After a good start this weekend, the men’s tennis team was unable to seal a win against Wisconsin in its Big Ten conference opener, falling to the Badgers 4-3.

The Wildcats looked good early, taking two of the three doubles matches and the doubles point.

Senior Adam Schaechterle and junior Matt Christian won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles against Wisconsin’s Brennen Phippen and Elliott Bisnow, while freshman Marc Dwyer and sophomore Juan Gomez took their match 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Christian Tempke and Willy Lock fell short of a win in their doubles match at the No. 2 spot.

The Cats couldn’t hold on to their 1-0 advantage and, in singles, the sole win came at No. 2, where Lock beat Phippen 6-2, 6-2.

Tempke came close at No. 1 singles after taking his second set and forcing a third. But the match went to Wisconsin’s Jeremy Sonkin 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The Cats drop to 5-6 on the season. They will take on Michigan at home for their second conference match up on Friday, Feb. 24.
