Senate vote could create poll on moving ATMs

Associated Student Government will vote on a bill tonight that proposes polling students about moving ATMs to more accessible locations.

If the bill passes at tonight’s Senate meeting, ASG will put a poll on the HereAndNow Web site asking students which on-campus ATMs they use and where they would like the machines relocated.

Members of the student services committee began work on the bill after U.S. Bank found that ATMs at the Pancoe Life Sciences Pavilion and Kellogg School of Management were not being used very frequently, said Whitney Gretz, ASG’s student services vice president and a Weinberg junior.

If students express interest, one of those ATMs or one of the three currently at Norris University Center would be moved to a busier location, Gretz said.

Potential new locations listed on the poll include Patten Gym, Lisa’s Cafe, Blomquist Recreation Center, University Library, the Freshman Quad and outside 1835 Hinman.

“People are going to have a lot more access to monetary services on campus,” said Weinberg sophomore Jessica Wash, a sponsor of the bill.

Few questions were asked when the bill was introduced at last week’s Senate meeting. Wash said she was confident the proposal would pass.

Since U.S Bank opened at Northwestern last year, the company has been working to make financial transactions easier for students, said Wash, a member of the student services committee.

After students complained that the ATM on University Place was frequently broken, U.S. Bank replaced it with a new machine.

“They’re definitely very interested in what we have to say,” she said.

Senators also will hear from William Banis, NU vice president for student affairs. Dan Broadwell, speaker of the Senate, said he expects Banis will discuss current Student Affairs issues.

Banis also might speak about the relationship between ASG and Student Affairs and the direction he sees that relationship going in the next year, said Broadwell, a Communication senior.
