Man accused of murder at Keg stays in custody

An Evanston man charged with killing another Evanston resident in June at The Keg of Evanston remains in custody after Monday’s status hearing in District Court in Skokie. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 24.

Antoine Hill, 19, is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting of Robert Gresham, 22, after a fight between the two men at The Keg, 810 Grove St., on June 19.

Prosecutors gave police reports to Hill’s defense attorney at Monday’s hearing, Assistant Attorney General Bill Elward said. More evidence will be presented at the next hearing.

The shooting was the result of a long-standing conflict between the two men, according to the Evanston Police Department. Both men were questioned previously about a separate June incident on the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Greenwood Street, where two men allegedly shot at each other from their cars.

Hill pleaded not guilty to the charge on Aug. 22. He is being held on $650,000 bond at Cook County Jail in Chicago.

The case is being tried by the Illinois Attorney General because Hill’s mother works at the the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The incident prompted Evanston City Council to review the city’s liquor regulations in attempt to curb underage drinking. If the law is passed, one proposal would mean that those under 21 would be forced to leave alcohol-selling establishments at midnight.

The Liquor Control Review Board also has suggested raising alcohol-related fines to $500 instead of enacting the midnight regulation.
