Across from the Loyola El stop next to the university’s book store lies a calm and cozy cafe, Kaffeccino. The space is larger than it appears — deep reds and varying shades of brown provide an intimate feeling.
The menu is not the handwritten chalky masterpiece that many small cafes showcase, and the smallest size is referred to as “tall,” but that is where chain-like similarities end. While the cafe offers traditional vanilla-flavored syrup, there is the additional option of having praline or tiramisu flavors added to your cup of coffee. And if blueberry muffins are just too plain, there’s always a cheesecake or pina coloda muffin waiting. But for traditional tastes, the caramel macchiato is delicious despite its need for a stronger caffeine kick.
The corner window seating is quite comfortable. There is a plush leather couch that allows customers to see the busy morning traffic on Sheridan Road through a mix of real and faux potted plants. The tables are a beautiful mahogany and welcoming for noon lunch with a friend; the long counter seating is great for those going solo.
Beautiful art decorates the walls. Vibrant colors on canvas and some on paper give more character to the cafe. The music in the background is just as pleasant as the art and is loud enough to be heard clearly but not enough to be a distraction.
With the combination of good coffee, good food and a friendly staff, Kaffeccino is a great place to visit. It is also a good environment for studying and has computer access and wireless Internet available.
More than a cafe but not quite a diner, Kaffeccino is a good place to escape the cold and drink something that will warm the spirit.
