One of two Evanston men arrested in November 2003 on charges that they robbed a Northwestern student was convicted Tuesday.
Tavares Z. Tyson, of the 1800 block of Lemar Avenue, was convicted of robbery and felony theft, charges to which he pled guilty, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
Tyson and Anthony L. Jones, both 21, of the 1300 block of Fowler Avenue, were arrested Nov. 22 on charges that they robbed a NU student of $5 at the corner of Church Street and Benson Avenue. At the time, both men were charged with one count of felony theft.
Both University and Evanston police described the arrest as a result of the departments’ cooperative efforts in response to the string of campus-area robberies and batteries that began last Fall Quarter.
Jones later was charged with aggravated battery and attempted robbery after an NU student identified him in a lineup as the man who had attacked him on Oct. 3.
Jones and Tyson previously had been arrested, with a third man, on Nov. 7, on charges that they stole wallets and cell phones from guests at a party at a NU student’s apartment on the 800 block of Hamlin Street. All three men were charged with misdemeanor theft in that incident.
Jones, whose case still is pending, is scheduled to appear on Oct. 22 at Circuit Court in Skokie.
