Accessibility Awareness Week
Accessibility Awareness Week began Monday and runs through Friday. Programming benefits Wheels of Change, the group sponsoring the week’s events. The band Whitsend performs at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Gathering Place at Norris University Center. Dance troupe Graffiti Dancers will perform at 8 p.m. Thursday at McCormick Auditorium in Norris. Womens’ leadership discussion
The president of the Great Chicago Women’s Leadership Network is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Technological Institute. Susan Mayfield will talk about how women can turn on-campus leadership into life-long leadership. The free speech is sponsored by Lambda National Panhellenic Leadership Recognition Society.
UPS chief talks globalization
UPS Chairman and CEO Michael Eskew will deliver a lecture on the challenges of international distribution in an era of globalization at 8 p.m., Wednesday, in the Owen L. Coon Forum at Leverone Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Travel writing lecture
Pico Iyer — author of “Video Night in Kathmandu,” “Falling Off the Map” and “Sun After Dark” — will be speaking Wednesday at 5 p.m in the McCormick Tribune Center Forum. His lecture will be part of the 9th Annual Greg Hinderyckx Travel Writing Lecture.
Asian dating, marriage lecture
Asian and Asian American Student Services will host a brown bag lunch on dating and marriage among Indian Americans at noon Thursday at the Multicultural Center, 1936 Sheridan Rd. Neeraja Aravamudan, Ph.D., assistant director of the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence, will discuss the struggles young people have with their families and with social expectations when dating. The event is co-sponsored by South Asian Students Alliance.
Foreign policy speech, dinner
State Sen. Jeff Schoenberg (9th), who represents Evanston, will speak at a free dinner Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Fiedler Hillel Center, 629 Foster St. Schoenberg will discuss how to handle foreign affair issues at the local level. Human Rights conference
NU’s inaugural Conference on Human Rights kicks off at 8 p.m. Thursday with a speech by Lt. Gen. Romeo Dallaire, commander of the United Nation’s Peacekeeping Forces in Rwanda during the Rwandan Genocide. Other programming includes keynote speaker Richard Holbrooke, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, at 7:30 p.m., Friday. For more information call 847-491-3524.
International law and terrorism
NU’s Center for Legal Studies is sponsoring a lecture by Kim Lane Sheppele, the John J. O’Brien professor of comparative law and professor of sociology at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She will be discussing the tension between the rule of law and the international war on terrorism. The lecture will be held at 4 p.m. on April 20 in Harris 108. A reception will follow.
Church and state debate
New Humanists NU is sponsoring “Under God? An Evening with Dr. Michael Newdow,” at 7 p.m. on April 21. Newdow’s speech will deal with the separation of church and state. For more information contact Gavin Myers at [email protected]
Kabuki master to perform
Theater director Shozo Sato will present his internationally acclaimed combination of Kabuki drama, Shakespeare and Greek classic works at 1 p.m. on April 24 in McCormick Auditorium at Norris University Center. The NU visiting professor will present a showcase titled “Story and Visual Image in Japanese Traditional Dance” for free. He will explain each step and dance pose before performing the entire dance.
