The Associated Student Government’s election commission ruled Monday night that a violation against presidential candidate Andrew Kaufman was valid, said election commissioner Adam Forsyth.
Under ASG election guidelines, candidates cannot have more than one Web site. A link on Kaufman’s pubweb site directed viewers to another page for the Madman Crush Party, which endorsed Kaufman, a McCormick sophomore.
“When I visited his Web site, it redirected me to this Web site and that’s how I found it,” said Forsyth, a Weinberg junior.
The second site contained Kaufman’s platform, as well as photos and other information about him.
Kaufman, who was out of town, was unable to attend the hearing Monday night. But two of his four campaign managers attended the meeting with the election commission, Forsyth said.
Kaufman’s campaign manager Stephen Koenig, a Communication senior, said he disagreed with the ruling.
“It’s complete bullshit,” said Koenig, who also is a self-proclaimed member of the Madman Crush Party. “As a party we had a Web site supporting Andrew Kaufman, and we had a link to that on his pubweb site.”
The election commission deducted $10 from Kaufman’s $100 spending limit and gave his campaign committee was given 24 hours to remove the information from the second Web site, Forsyth said.
Forsyth added that the information from the second site could be placed on Kaufman’s official page.
“When Kaufman wins, these little technicalities and frivolities won’t matter much,” Koenig said.
Kaufman is running against Weinberg junior Jane Lee, ASG’s current external relations chairwoman.
