Men’s tennis team heads into final tournament of the fall

The Northwestern men’s tennis team has one last hurrah before closing out its fall season and hibernating for several months.

On Saturday and Sunday the Wildcats will compete at the 2003 Big Ten Singles Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. All nine members of the NU squad will compete in the tournament, which comes two weeks after the last of the Cats singles players fell in the ITA Midwest Championships.

Third-seeded junior Tommy Hanus will face Wisconsin’s Ward Bortz in the first round, and classmate Chuck Perrin will take on another Badger, Jordan Raemisch.

NU head coach Paul Torricelli said he thinks this tournament is a good opportunity for the pair to make an impression.

“Tommy and Chuck had solid performances at the ITA Regionals last month, and I see them doing the same here,” Torricelli said in a press release. “Either of them could be a factor and they are both eager to prove themselves.”

Hanus and Perrin were the last remaining Wildcats at the ITA Midwest Championships, making it to the round of 16 before being eliminated.

Also in the field of 64 are sophomore Adam Schaechterle, freshman Christian Tempke, freshman Matthew Christian, freshman Jamie Friedland.

Freshman Willy Lock, junior Justin Hoeveler and senior Ahmed Wahla will compete in the 7-9 draw.

Second-round competition will happen Saturday, immediately after the conclusion of the first round. The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will then be held Sunday, while the semifinals and finals will take place Monday.
