In the liner notes to R.E.M.’s second greatest-hits compilation In Time: The Best of R.E.M., 1988-2003, guitarist Peter Buck reminisces about writing the third track and newest single, “Bad Day,” an unreleased live track firmly rooted in the ground of the ubiquitous 1987 Document-era single “It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).” Buck writes, “We started writing [“Bad Day”] in 1986. We finished writing it in 2003. The sad thing is, between those years nothing much has changed.”
