The rock-music scene at Northwestern sucks. Maybe that’s too harsh a verdict — it doesn’t, like, totally suck — but it is gasping for air.
It certainly doesn’t rock.
I say this from the perspective of a fan and a performer. Last year I was in a band of bluegrass persuasion, “The Porch Band.” We climaxed with a less-than-stimulating noon performance at Dillo Day. Then “The Porch Band” marched right off the porch and into the grave.
Don’t blame us; we were merely following a trend. It is difficult to rock at NU. Let’s try to figure out why.
NU is more like a bus station than a home. Students stop in for a while, abuse Evanston and then move on to the bright lights of big cities and big careers. Which means people don’t idle their engines here for too long. Definitely not long enough to start rock bands.
We are on the fast track, squeezing good grades out of a tiny little quarter while running organizations with one hand and directing plays with the other.
We are, in short, building rՀ
