The good news for the Northwestern women’s basketball team is that it has more wins than Wisconsin, its opponent for tonight’s match-up at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The bad news is the Badgers have the fewest wins in the Big Ten, putting the Cats in firm grasp of second-worst overall record.
All the more reason for NU to have expectations for a victory against the 4-14 Badgers.
“We were going through the standings, and there are three or four teams that only have two conference wins, so we’re only one win behind them,” senior guard Emily Butler said. “This is a great opportunity to go out and get a win and get ourselves in a great position.”
This game will be a change of pace for the Cats, who have had to focus on a single player in its recent Big Ten matchups.
Kelly Mazzante of Penn State, Caity Matter of Ohio State and Jennifer Smith of Michigan were all focal points of the Cats defense.
Wisconsin, however, has a balanced arsenal of scorers. The top scorer averages 11 points a game while the fifth averages just more than seven.
But this may not necessarily be a good thing for the Cats.
“That just means you have to cover everyone,” Butler said. “There’s usually a surprise player. We didn’t think (Purdue point guard Erika) Valek was gonna do much because she was more of a passer.”
Valek dropped 26 on the Cats in No. 12 Purdue’s 76-60 victory Sunday.
What the Cats should worry about the most is matchup problems.
Of the 14 players on the Wisconsin roster, six are listed taller than 6-feet. The tallest of the trees is 6-foot-7 junior Lello Gebisa.
