Jeff Buckley: once more, with feeling

It’s been more than five years since Jeff Buckley, who experienced stardom following the release of his critically and commercially successful debut album, 1994’s Grace, waded into the Mississippi River near Memphis, Tenn., on May 29, 1997. On that balmy evening, with his clothes still on, he began to sing Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” while a friend watched him drift into the river. And then, silence. The singular voice that could dramatically soar eight octaves and, more impressively, touch most of those who heard it, was hushed. Buckley’s body was found on June 4. He was just 30 years old.
