Man held at gunpoint near Civic Center while walking home

An armed robbery occurred early Saturday morning on the 2100 block of Ridge Avenue, said Sgt. Steven Stoeckl of University Police.

The victim was walking home behind an apartment building at 12:04 a.m. when the offenders approached him. One demanded his money and cellular telephone, and the other displayed a silver handgun, Stoeckl said.

The victim handed over his phone and his wallet containing $50 before the offenders ran westward, behind the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave., said Lt. Curt Kuempel of Evanston Police Department.

No arrests had been made in the case as of Sunday afternoon, Kuempel said.

The victim was not affiliated with Northwestern, but the incident occurred in a neighborhood where many students live, Stoeckl said.

Communication junior Tracy Thau, who lives on the 2200 block of Ridge, said she is alarmed about the recent armed robberies in her neighborhood.

“It will make me think twice about attending a meeting at night,” she said.

Thau said she will call the Escort Service in the future when she needs to get home after dark.

Two weeks ago, a male NU student was the victim of an armed robbery on the 800 block of Hamlin Street. Also, four violent robberies involving pedestrians occurred in central Evanston last weekend. Police have not connected any of the recent robberies.
