SBX closes shop after 64 years serving NU

For more than 64 years, one store on Sherman Avenue was always bustling with students buying textbooks, school supplies and Northwestern apparel during the first week of classes. This week, the store stands empty.

Student Book Exchange, formerly at 1737 Sherman Ave., closed its doors Aug. 8, leaving Norris Bookstore as the only major supplier of textbooks at NU.

A new tenant will move into the vacated rental space, said Jonathan Perman, executive director of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. But he said he could reveal neither when, or by whom, the space would be rented, nor whether the space would be divided.

A sign posted on the door of the former SBX store refers passersby seeking information on the space to Family Properties. Family Properties was not available for comment Monday.

SBX had served as a central location for everything from buying and selling textbooks to processing film. But financial stress eventually forced SBX to close.
