Alpha Phi Alpha, KD take top Greek honors at ceremony

The Greek Awards ceremony Wednesday at Fisk Hall honored the accomplishments of fraternities and sororities in multiple areas, including community service, scholarship programming and outstanding social events.

This ceremony, sponsored by Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and National Pan-Hellenic Council, gave the President’s Award for Greek Excellence to Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Delta. Alpha Chi Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon were the night’s other big winners. Phil Ordway and Emily Schultz won Greek Man and Woman of the Year.

Ordway said that he was honored and that his greatest accomplishment was keeping everyone on track as IFC president.

“There was a lot of turmoil, but we were still able to accomplish our goals,” said Ordway, an Education senior.

Ordway has served as IFC president, Delta Chi president and vice president of Order of Omega.

Schultz said she was happy with her award.

“I was extremely honored and proud to win the Greek Woman of the Year award, and it proved to me that all my hard work paid off,” said Schultz, a Speech senior who has served as Kappa Kappa Gamma president and vice president for recruitment for Panhel.

Schultz said her biggest accomplishment was completing recruitment this year.

The Greek governing bodies also named this year’s Maycourt, the top awards for seniors. The awards are usually revealed at Maysing, an annual spring event where Greek houses band together to perform skits and dances.

Former Delta Delta Delta President Jennie Ellis and former Associated Student Government President Jordan Heinz won the Maycourt awards for campus leadership.

“Leadership is very important to me, and I always try to lead in the Greek community,” Ellis said. “I feel surprised and honored at the same time.”

IFC presented a new scholarship award for involvement at the academic and chapter level to David Roberts, a member of Kappa Sigma who has achieved academic success in the Honors Program in Medical Education.

“I’m glad that I can positively represent the house and maybe be a model for other people in the Greek community who strive to increase their scholarship,” said Roberts, a Weinberg junior.
