Lacrosse splits opening games

The Northwestern lacrosse team split its first two varsity matches since 1991 this weekend.

The Wildcats beat Marist 15-2 in Richmond, N.J., on Friday, as sophomore Angela McMahon notched four goals.

Sunday, NU’s second-half rally fell short as the Cats lost 13-6 to Richmond in Baltimore. NU freshman Jenna Gantner had three goals in the loss.

Three swimmers make the cut

Three additional members of the NU women’s swimming team qualified for the NCAA championships when final cut times were announced Friday.

Breaststroke specialist Katie Simmons, backstroker Susie Sample and distance swimmer Vicky West learned Friday that they will be swimming in Austin, Texas, March 21-23. Butterflyers Carmen Cosgrove, Merritt Adams and Rachel Johnson had already qualified.

Diver Ashley Carter may up the team’s total to seven if she qualifies at the NCAA Diving Zones on Saturday and Sunday.

Giacche, Kane head to NCAAs

The Cats wrestling squad finished last at the Big Ten championship meet this weekend in Champaign, but NU grapplers John Giacche and Ryan Kane both qualified for the NCAA championships in Albany, N.Y., March 21-23.

The 141-pounder Giacche bowed to Ohio State’s Robert Sessley in the fifth-place match.

Kane, seeded fourth at 165 pounds, took seventh place to secure the final qualifying spot.

NU collected only 13 points at the meet to finish last for the second year in a row.

Tennis squads go undefeated

NU’s tennis teams were perfect this weekend. The No. 13 women’s team (10-4) topped Indiana 5-2 on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind., and beat Purdue 6-1 on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The No. 46 men’s team (10-3) downed No. 44 Harvard 5-2 in Cambridge, Mass., on Saturday.

Both squads are now 4-0 in the Big Ten.
