Web E-mail Gateway’s new look mirrors NU home page

Information Technology has revamped the Web E-mail Gateway to match the new Northwestern home page.

NUIT officials added purple and yellow to the sign-on page of the Web E-mail Gateway on Nov. 19. The color scheme resembles that of the new NU home page, which was unveiled Nov. 13 and will become official the week of Dec. 3.

“We’re looking at making it more in concert with the new look of the main Web site,” said Tom Board, director of technology support services.

Board said that although Web E-mail Gateway’s new look is an NUIT project, the group did consult with University Relations, the department responsible for the new NU home page.

The Web E-mail Gateway is an important tool that people use while off campus, so NUIT wanted the site to look like it belonged to NU, Board said.

“It’s nice that they’re starting to adapt to the new look,” said Alan Cubbage, vice president for university relations.

Web Communications, the three-person group within University Relations that created the new NU home page with the help of an outside consultant, is developing templates for other university offices interested in adopting a design similar to the new home page.

The Office of Student Affairs, the benefits division of the Department of Human Resources, Center for the Writing Arts and Alumni Relations have expressed an interest in adopting the new design, said Staci Roberts, director of Web Communications.

The splash of gold on the new home page emphasizes the features at the bottom of the page, such as news and calendar information, Cubbage said. The color white, which had dominated the old home page and Web e-mail sign-on page, was not as eye-catching, Cubbage said.

Board said users can expect more changes to the Web E-mail Gateway in the future but declined to elaborate.
