Three-play: Cats will attempt return to triple threat to aid ‘O’

For years, women’s soccer head coach Marcia McDermott employed three forwards in order to get as much pressure as possible in front of the opposition’s net.

Enter new Northwestern coach Jenny Haigh, who initially decided to stick with McDermott’s 4-3-3 formation. But when the Wildcats (2-5-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) dropped a few games in the early going, including a 3-0 loss to St. Mary’s (Calif.), Haigh opted to change things up for the first time in any of the current players’ careers. She yanked one of the three forwards from the lineup, opting for a 4-4-2 alignment.

And the move paid off. NU managed to score goals despite having a lesser presence up front. That was until this past weekend, when the Cats were blanked twice by Michigan and Michigan State.
