Two down, one to go.
Northwestern University administrators on Monday announced a $147 credit for all full-time graduate students next fall to offset a 46 percent increase in student health insurance that was announced in April. This step fulfilled two of the three major points the Graduate Student Association outlined in a petition issued to administrators at meetings last Wednesday.
“We’re very happy with the way things turned out,” said Mauricio Drelichman, one of the GSA members spearheading the health insurance initiative. “In the fall, we’ll begin working on our third point: to get fully subsidized health insurance through the university. I’m confident we can work together with administrators next year.”
Along with the credit, graduate students who are paid by the university now have the option of enrolling in a nine-to-12 month payment plan, in which a small insurance fee is deducted from their paychecks. Previously, graduates could only spread their payments over the first four months of the school year.
