Pulitzer Prize-winner, online pioneer give commencement

Two schools have announced spring commencement speakers.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page will be giving the commencement speech at the Medill School of Journalism’s graduation ceremony on June 16.

Page, who won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Commentary, has written columns for the Tribune since 1984. He also appears on television as a news analyst for ABC News and Black Entertainment Television’s “Lead Story.”

Page lectured last summer at Medill’s Academy for Alternative Journalism, a summer program that teaches young minority journalists the skills needed to write for alternative weekly newspapers. He taught at Medill from 1978 to 1979.

Medill Dean Ken Bode said Page’s enthusiasm for journalism will make him a good speaker.

“I look for somebody who celebrates our profession,” he said. “(Page) is not going to come in and talk to our students about all the problems of our profession, but he’s going to talk about why there’s joy in the everyday work of the jobs we do.”

Donald Norman, president of a Chicago-area online education company, will speak at the School of Education and Social Policy’s commencement.

Norman is professor emeritus of cognitive science and psychology at the University of California, San Diego, and an executive at Hewlett Packard. He is an author and a co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, an executive consulting firm.
