BET’s Black Comedy Tour makes stop to entertain at NU

In honor of Black History Month, comedian Damon Williams encouraged his audience to step out of its racial comfort zones.

“Black people, I want you to plan an event that starts on time,” Williams joked. “Mexican people, I want you to get in a car and drive somewhere by yourself.”

Williams was one of four comedians who performed in the Black Comedy Tour on Friday night. The stand-up comedy show, which drew about 170 people to Ryan Family Auditorium, was one of For Members Only’s largest Winter Quarter events.

“We do traditionally bring in some newer comedians,” said Erin Baker, FMO secretary and a Speech junior. “This year we did a large volume of publicity. We’re just trying to get a diverse crowd tonight.”

More than 400 comedians travel to colleges around the country as part of the Black Comedy Tour. The four comics who performed Friday have all appeared doing stand up on Black Entertainment Television. One of the comics, Shang, said BET already had fired and re-hired him twice.

“You’re not supposed to punch other comics during the taping,” he explained.

Other comics didn’t pride themselves on their high energy. Lavell “Big Daddy” Crawford discussed his laziness at length, explaining how he didn’t leave the house when he dropped his car keys. And when he does drive, he uses the cruise control, even in his driveway, Crawford said. At one point, he excused himself “to take a fat break” and rested against the mike stand with his eyes closed.

Crawford said he also resented motivational television commercials for the armed forces.
