Daily wins second place overall in design contest

The Daily won second place in overall design in the Student Society for News Design’s 2000 design contest, sponsored by and judged at the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

In individual awards, Managing Editor for Presentation Mike Babin won second place in the designer of the year category.

“It’s a great honor to get recognized anytime, but it’s always nice when the entire paper comes back with honors,” Babin said. “Every day, a lot of people put a lot of hard work into making The Daily look good.”

Babin, a Medill junior, also won third place in page one design, while Janine Lew took third place in sports design and Jeremy Gilbert and Kathy Bryja tied for second place in special section design.

Patrick Cooper received honorable mention for The Daily’s Web site design.

Last year, Daily staffer Joel Odom won the contest’s designer of the year award and Jason McKean took second place.

“The Daily typically does very well in this competition,” Babin said. “I think the designers who were recognized this year owe a lot to the designers who have come through here in the past. We all owe a lot to each other.”
