An 8-year-old boy was hit by a Chicago Transit Authority Purple Line train Saturday afternoon and remains in critical condition, police said.

Evanston police officers responded to the report of a juvenile struck by a CTA train at approximately 1:07 p.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The boy was struck by a southbound train just south of the Dempster Street station, where he and a second boy were walking along the tracks, Dugan said. The other child was not injured in the incident.

The child hit by the train has a head injury and is currently listed in critical condition, Dugan said. Both children were transported to St. Francis Hospital following the incident.
Power was cut off to Purple Line trains in both directions for about an hour after the incident, CTA officials said.

Evanston police are conducting an investigation into the incident.
