A severe rain and hailstorm hit Evanston Sunday at about 3 p.m. Sunday, downing trees and leaving nearly 2,000 residents without power before it was restored Monday morning.

Three people attending the Lakeshore Arts Festival at Dawes Park were struck by fallen tree branches and were taken to Evanston Hospital with minor injuries.

The main area affected by the power outage was between Main Street and South Boulevard, west of Ridge Avenue. About 150 residents remained without power Monday morning.

Evanston Police Department received more than 80 phone calls after the storm struck from people reporting power outages and downed trees. One tree on Warren Street caught fire as a result of the storm and was extinguished by the fire department.

Public Works Forestry and Street Maintenance Division staff were called in to handle storm-related issues, and crews worked Sunday evening and Monday morning to handle 25 total downed or damaged trees.
