A 20-year-old man admitted Friday that he perpetrated an unsolved burglary case from the end of June.

The man was arrested Thursday in connection with trespassing in central Evanston, which led him to return to the police station at about midnight to confess to a June 23 burglary of an apartment, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The Evanston resident, who was accompanied to the police station by a relative, told police he wanted to take responsibility to “turn his life around,” Dugan said.

A 47-year-old woman had reported to police on June 23 that someone had stolen a purse from her apartment in the 1800 block of Ashland Avenue between 9 and 10 p.m., he said. She told police an unknown person took her $50 purse, which contained $100 as well as a credit card, passport and other identification cards. The man admitted to police he had entered the apartment through an unlocked door and had taken the purse, Dugan said.

The man was charged with residential burglary, which is a felony.

Taxicab driver charged with behind-the-wheel battery of motorcyclist

A 56-year-old taxicab driver was arrested Thursday evening in connection with the battery of a motorcyclist after a conflict on the road.

The driver, who was talking on his cell phone, was attempting a lane change while heading west on Oakton Street near Hartrey Avenue when his vehicle nearly hit a motorcyclist, Dugan said. When the motorcyclist pulled up beside the taxicab to get the driver’s attention, the cab hit him, he said.

The pair proceeded to turn into a parking lot off Oakton Street, where the motorcyclist got off his vehicle to take a picture of the cab’s license plate. The driver then backed the cab up, striking the motorcyclist in the left thigh and leaving the parking lot, Dugan said.

After police called the cab company to tell the driver return to the scene, the Evanston resident was charged with misdemeanor battery as well as other traffic violations.
