Anti-Semitic and racist graffiti was discovered the day of commencement at Ryan Field, where Northwestern held its ceremony, marking the second incident at the University this month.

Staff at Ryan Field found the graffiti, which included swastikas and one other Nazi symbol written in the dirt on the windows of the stadium’s North Tower, before commencement on Friday at about 2:15 a.m., University Police Deputy Chief Dan McAleer said. UP are working with the FBI to identify groups or individuals that could be behind these incidents, McAleer said.

Construction workers reported anti-Semitic and racist graffiti spray-painted onto the construction site of the new Kellogg School of Management building June 8. Similar graffiti was discovered multiple times at University Library in April.

The graffiti at Ryan Field, which was categorized as a hate crime by UP, was photographed by an evidence technician and cleaned from the windows, McAleer said.

Along with federal authorities, UP are comparing the language, wording and symbols used in the graffiti to find trends that could lead them to potential suspects, McAleer added.
