City warns residents about renewable energy solicitations

Following reports from several citizens, Evanston issued a warning Tuesday to residents about potentially misleading mail solicitations from an alternative electricity supplier.

The city said residents had contacted them about receiving solicitations from power suppliers advertising an opportunity to switch from the city’s current plan to completely renewable energy. Evanston said the solicitations were misleading, as it already supplies participating residents and small businesses with 100 percent renewable energy.

Homefield Energy has served as the city’s electricity supplier since April 2014, when the city signed a three-year contract with Homefield called the Community Choice Electricity Aggregation program to provide citizens with renewable energy. Residents can opt in or out of the program at any time.

“If residents are satisfied with the program, there is no need to take any action,” the city said in a news release.
