Evanston releases highest bills from 2014

Julia Jacobs, Assistant City Editor

Evanston spent the most money last year on debt repayment, according to numbers the city released Monday on the highest expenditures of 2014.

The highest bills that followed debt repayment, which amounted to about $30 million, were from pensions and health benefits. The city spent about $19.2 million on payments to pensions and about $13 million for medical and life insurance benefits.

The city’s 10th largest bill was nearly $2 million on credit card purchases, a figure city staff is currently analyzing, city manager Wally Bobkiewicz said in an email to local media.

“It is a lot of money spent on credit cards,” Bobkiewicz said in the email. “The city discloses every transaction made on city credit cards, but we need to figure out ways to be even more transparent.”
