Evanston police warn of donation scam

At least one young person has been going around Evanston and Northwestern’s Evanston campus asking for money in a door-to-door donation scam, Evanston police said Friday.

Evanston Police Department has received several reports of a young person going to homes in the city claiming to be collecting money for a memorial basketball tournament, officials said in a news release.

The tournament is supposedly being held at the Robert Crown Center in remembrance of an Evanston Township High School student who was shot and killed. However, police said there is no such tournament.

The young person collecting the money also has a laminated photograph of the student, but one resident said the photograph was of a person killed in Chicago in 2014, police said.

Anyone who receives a request for a donation is asked to call EPD at 847-866-5000.
