A Chicago resident is in stable condition after he was shot late Thursday night outside of a building in Evanston, police said.

Police responded to several 911 calls of shots fired in the 2000 block of Darrow Avenue around 11:50 p.m., authorities said. Officers found a 26-year-old man who had been shot in the buttocks.

The Chicago man had been visiting friends inside a residence on the street, police said. He went out onto the building’s gangway and was shot by a man who was in the backyard, police said.

Paramedics transported the man to Evanston Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The man who was shot has a history of gang ties and is not being cooperative with police, authorities said.

Detectives are investigating the identity of the shooter and the motive, police said.
