Former Northwestern running back Venric Mark will transfer to West Texas A&M University, ESPN reported Saturday morning.

The University announced last week that Mark would be leaving NU to play closer to his family. Mark told ESPN that his reasons involved the health of his mother and grandmother.

The school is located in Canyon, Texas about 90 minutes from Mark’s mother, who currently lives in Lubbock.

“I’m devastated to leave my second home, but life is full of challenges and I’ve been presented with another one,” Mark said earlier this month in a news release. “Right now this is what is best for me and my family.”

The announcement came just days after NU suspended Mark for the first two games of the 2014 season for an undisclosed violation of team policy.

Mark did not play for most of the 2013 season because of ankle injuries. Due to his loss for the 2014 season, senior Treyvon Green is expected to be NU’s starting running back.

Mark announced via Twitter on Tuesday that despite his transfer, he will still be getting his degree from NU.
