Evanston officials have declared a daytime snow emergency for both Thursday and Friday.

The snow emergency will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both days. The decision came late Wednesday evening after nearly 10 inches of snow had fallen on Evanston within 48 hours, according to an email from James Maiworm, assistant director of the Public Works department.

The snow emergency applies to non-snow route streets with parking available on both sides, according to a city news release. On Thursday, vehicles are prohibited from parking on even-numbered sides of the streets. Parking is not allowed on odd-number sides of the streets on Friday. Emergency sirens will sound twice on both Thursday and Friday to signal the snow emergency, at 7:15 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Officials also announced a snow route parking ban for Thursday night, meaning that drivers will not be allowed to park on designated roads from 11 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday. An emergency siren will sound at 8:15 p.m. Thursday to remind people to move their cars, according the city’s website.

The Public Works department has brought on additional drivers to plow the city’s main and residential streets “around the clock” until the snow ends, Maiworm said in an email.
