Schapiro 17th highest-paid private college president

December 10, 2012

University President Morton Schapiro is the 17th highest-paid president of a private college by the Chronicle of Higher Education's count.

Schapiro took home more than $1.25 million in 2010, according to federal tax records that the Chronicle compiled in compensation rankings today.

Robert Zimmer, president of the University of Chicago, made nearly $1.6 million in 2010 after four years at NU's cross-town rival. He ranked ninth on the list.

Schapiro came in third among college presidents who have been in their position for a year or less. He started as NU's 16th president for the 2009-2010 school year after nearly a decade at the helm of Williams College in western Massachusetts.

In October, NU trustees extended Schapiro's contract by five years. The board's move means that Schapiro will lead NU through the 2018-2019 school year.

It would be interesting to know what sorts of incentives and rewards are part of Morty's comp package to see how successful he is in terms of achieving the goals the board has established. It would be useful to know if the board has set useful goals and if they are in alignment with what we all feel the university should be doing.
